Mountain Moss

"And close beside this aged Thorn,

There is a fresh and lovely sight

A beauteous heap, a hill of moss,

Just half a foot in height.

All the lovely colours there you see,

All colours that were never seen;

And mossy network too is there,

As if by hand of lady fair

The work had woven been;

And cup, the darling of the eye,

So deep is their vermilion dye."

~The Thorn Part IV by William Wordsworth

  • Care and Instructions

    All handmade soaps last longer when kept out of water and allowed to dry between uses. Try our soap saver bags to store your soap by hanging to dry. Our wooden soap dishes keep the soap raised for airflow.

    Deep Well Farm products do not contain preservatives. Glycerin in soap draws moisture to it. In humid conditions (shower/bathroom) moisture may condense on the soap. Some soaps contain more glycerin than others.

    Each bar is unique in design. Bars may contain air bubbles or pockets and  inconsistent texturing. Bars may vary visually from image shown.

  • Why vermilion?

    Wordsworth uses this word to end the section with a powerful visual image. Vermilion is also called cinnabar and is used to describe a rich or scarlet red with a hint of orange.

    It is a cool word. Try using it today. Read some more Wordsworth, you might find something you like, probably not as much as our soap but you could try.

    Back to the poetry. Well, put this soap in your cart then come back here.

    Ok. The Thorn is a mystery told by a sea captain about the tragedy of Martha Ray's child. Part IV includes powerful descriptions of the hill on which The Thorn resides. I especially enjoyed the visual images of the moss.

    Can you see it, the mound of moss? Have you ever sunk your hands into thick moss?

    Loss (the thorn) is a part of nature (beautiful and full of life).

    Beauty often surrounds loss if you can see it.
